Jim Anderson, a Stateside visitor to this blog, asked me a very good question last week: what is the correct colour of Pearsalls silk to use on the orange partridge? There are two colours in common use for this pattern - #19 (hot orange) and #6a (orange). I tend to use the former as I like its deep mahoghany brown colour when waxed or wet.
However, I realise that this might upset a few people as the original tying used a paler hued silk. And after all, this series of posts is all about the origins and correct versions of these traditional flies. So it's only right that I add a photo of the orange partridge using the #6a silk:
